US Magazine Backs Pakistan Over India’s Actions Against Indus Waters Treaty

Islamabad: Following India’s move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, water politics in South Asia has taken a new turn, raising concerns over regional stability and human security.

According to the US magazine The National Interest, the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty could further escalate tensions in the region. The magazine described India’s Dulhasti Stage-II project as a step in violation of the treaty and warned that India is increasingly attempting to use water as a strategic weapon.

The publication noted that a water crisis could become a major humanitarian threat in South Asia. It also stated that India’s decision to halt the sharing of hydrological data violates international law. The Permanent Court of Arbitration has clearly ruled that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

The article further emphasized that the Indus Waters Treaty serves as a fundamental guarantee of food security in South Asia. Under international legal obligations, India is required to ensure the flow of water from the western rivers to Pakistan.

According to the US journal, India’s attempts to weaponize water resources are unacceptable under international law and will not be upheld by global courts.
