Major Relief for Pakistanis in Germany as Pakistan and Germany Finalize Dual Citizenship Agreement

Islamabad: In a major and historic development, Pakistan and Germany have finalized all legal and regulatory requirements related to dual citizenship, bringing significant relief to Pakistanis residing in Germany.

The Pakistani Embassy in Germany announced that all constitutional, legal, and procedural formalities have been completed, and Germany has now been officially added to the list of countries with which Pakistan allows dual citizenship.

According to an official public notice issued by the Pakistani Embassy in Berlin, Pakistani-origin individuals living in Germany will now be able to retain their Pakistani citizenship upon acquiring German nationality. Previously, Pakistani nationals were required to renounce their Pakistani citizenship in order to obtain German citizenship.

Diplomatic sources said the decision fulfills a long-standing demand of the Pakistani community in Germany and will benefit thousands of overseas Pakistanis by providing legal security and practical convenience. Experts believe the move will further strengthen social, economic, and investment ties between Pakistan and Germany.

The statement also noted that Pakistani-origin individuals who had previously renounced their Pakistani citizenship to acquire German nationality will soon be provided with detailed guidelines regarding the re-acquisition of Pakistani citizenship. The procedure, eligibility criteria, and required documentation will be announced separately after consultations with relevant authorities.

Following the approval of dual citizenship, Pakistanis living in Germany are expected to enjoy greater ease in employment, business, education, and travel, along with improved legal facilitation in Pakistan related to property ownership, banking, investment, and family matters.
