Karachi’s First Ferry Terminal Inaugurated; Passenger Ferry Service to Operate to Chabahar

Karachi: The first ferry terminal at Karachi Port has been inaugurated at the East Wharf, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s maritime sector. Pakistan’s first passenger ferry service is expected to begin operations by January 20, carrying up to 246 passengers to the Iranian port of Chabahar.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the ferry terminal and service represent a significant opportunity for the country’s maritime industry. He noted that the new terminal offers facilities comparable to those of an airport, with immigration, customs, and departure processes to be completed on-site.

The minister revealed that four operators from China have expressed interest in running ferry services. He said that while initiatives in this sector were previously delayed due to hesitation, the current government has moved swiftly, issuing Pakistan’s first-ever passenger ferry license within seven days.

Junaid Anwar added that strengthening the blue economy is a key priority of the prime minister and the field marshal, and the launch of ferry services is part of that broader vision.

The ferry operator informed that the fare for the Karachi–Chabahar route has been set at PKR 50,000. The journey will depart at 5:00 pm and is expected to take approximately 16 hours. The service will initially operate twice a week.
