Islamabad:Pakistan Railways has achieved a historic milestone by generating more than Rs93 billion in revenue in 2025, marking a significant improvement in safety standards, modernization, and operational efficiency. Officials expect total revenue to reach as high as Rs1 trillion by the end of the fiscal year.
The national railway system has introduced wide-ranging reforms, including the development of smart stations, modern train rakes, complete digitalization, and enhanced passenger services across the country. In 2025, Rawalpindi became Pakistan’s first smart railway station, equipped with advanced security and surveillance cameras. Several other major stations are scheduled for modernization by 2026.
Following the establishment of a dedicated Safety Directorate, the accident rate has dropped from 0.09 percent to 0.04 percent, reflecting a major improvement in railway safety. Within eight months, eight train rakes—including Shalimar Express, Pak Business Express, Lasani Express, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz Express—were upgraded. Authorities stated that all trains will be fully modernized by 2026.
Pakistan Railways has also completed full digitalization of its operations, introducing e-filing, computerized attendance, and enhanced transparency. Passenger facilities have been upgraded with the installation of ATMs, digital vending machines, point-of-sale systems, and improved food quality monitoring. Cleaning and operational services at major stations have been outsourced to improve efficiency, while 394 acres of encroached railway land have been recovered.
Major infrastructure projects, including upgrades to the Karachi–Rohri track, further demonstrate Pakistan Railways’ commitment to modernization, efficiency, and national development. Railway officials described these reforms as a historic milestone aimed at strengthening financial stability, advancing technology, and significantly improving the quality of life for passengers.
