Field Marshal Asim Munir Emerges as Key Figure in Trump’s Inner Circle, Washington Times Reports

Washington: The Washington Times has highlighted Field Marshal Asim Munir’s rising prominence in U.S.-Pakistan relations, describing him as a “star” in former President Donald Trump’s inner circle following the brief Pakistan-India conflict in May 2025.

According to the American publication, Trump’s association with Asim Munir has been jokingly referred to as a “bromance.” The Pakistani military chief has been lauded with titles such as “Disciplined Dark Horse” and “Deliberate Mystery,” and his lunch meeting at the White House was reportedly a first for a Pakistani military head.

The report states that Field Marshal Munir received a red carpet welcome at the U.S. Central Command headquarters, engaging in high-level strategic discussions with American military leadership. By early 2026, Pakistan is seen as central to Trump’s grand strategy in South Asia.

The newspaper noted that the sustainability of the new U.S. policy will depend on the actions of both Delhi and Islamabad. Field Marshal Munir and Pakistan played a key role in reshaping U.S. policy and regional balance in South Asia during 2025. The Washington Times described 2025 as a revolutionary year for Pakistan-U.S. relations, marking the end of the “India First” era and giving Pakistan a central role in American South Asia strategy.

Initially, Washington had expected India to dominate through platforms like the Quad and to sideline Pakistan. However, India’s internal political dynamics, restrictions on personal freedoms, uneven military performance, and diplomatic rigidity raised doubts about its ability to act as a regional stabilizer.

The article highlighted that in March 2025, Donald Trump unexpectedly praised Pakistan in a speech, altering the policy direction in Washington. Islamabad capitalized on the opportunity, turning even limited cooperation into unexpected diplomatic credit. The decisive turning point, according to the report, was the intense but brief May clash between Pakistan and India, where Pakistan’s military performance reportedly impressed Trump and reshaped U.S. perceptions of the country.
