Zahran Mamdani Becomes First Muslim and South Asian Mayor of New York City

New York:Democratic candidate **Zahran Mamdani** has made history by winning the **New York City mayoral election**, becoming the **first Muslim and South Asian mayor** in the city’s history.
At just **34 years old**, Mamdani is also the **youngest person in over a century** to hold the position of New York City mayor. The **New York City Board of Elections** announced in a post on X that this election witnessed the **highest voter turnout in five decades**, reflecting unprecedented public engagement.
Mamdani’s Republican opponent, **Curtis Sliwa**, conceded defeat on Tuesday night, telling his supporters:
> “A mayor has been elected, and of course, I wish him well — because if he does a good job, it will benefit all of us.”
Following Mamdani’s victory, **former U.S. President Barack Obama** congratulated all Democratic winners in Tuesday’s elections, praising their leadership and vision.
In a post on X, Obama wrote:
