Karachi: Order to Remove Non-Graduate SHOs from Sindh Police Largely Ignored

KARACHI: Despite directives issued by the Sindh Inspector General (IG) in compliance with a court order, most police stations in Karachi continue to have non-graduate Station House Officers (SHOs) posted, sources revealed.

According to police insiders, Thursday’s notification regarding the removal of under-qualified SHOs has seen little to no implementation. Records show that several SHOs currently serving in Karachi were originally recruited as constables, many with only middle or intermediate-level education.

In previous decades, constables were hired with a middle school qualification and assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) with intermediate-level education, later promoted over time to inspector and deputy superintendent of police (DSP) ranks.

The Sindh IG had issued explicit instructions, in line with the High Court’s directives, that SHOs must possess at least a graduate-level qualification. Furthermore, officers with criminal records or poor reputations were also ordered to be immediately removed from SHO posts.

However, implementation of these orders remains minimal, raising questions over compliance within the Sindh police force.
