Indian Politicians Urge Asia Cup Boycott, But BCCI Stands Firm on Participation

Calls for boycotting the upcoming Asia Cup are growing louder among Indian politicians, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains committed to participating in the tournament as per the original schedule.

According to Indian media reports, the BCCI has decided not to withdraw from the Asia Cup, and this decision was made after two months of internal consultations. Sources indicate that India’s withdrawal could have negative implications on its chances of hosting future international sporting events, including the 2036 Olympics, the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and the 2032 Youth Olympics.

The BCCI reportedly agreed to participate in the Asia Cup to avoid violating international sports protocols. Boycotting a multinational event over bilateral disputes could breach the international sports charter, which treats participation in multilateral tournaments as a separate issue from bilateral ties.

Despite the board’s stance, political criticism continues. Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi took to social media to lambast both the Indian government and the BCCI. Sharing the Asian Cricket Council’s press release, she condemned what she called the government’s “double standards” on Operation Sindoor, questioning why cricketing ties with Pakistan are being maintained while trade and other forms of engagement remain suspended.

“When all other forms of cooperation with Pakistan are banned, why is cricket still being played?” Chaturvedi asked, calling the situation hypocritical and shameful.

The controversy highlights the complex intersection of sports and politics in South Asia, particularly when India-Pakistan relations are involved.
