Fragrance or Danger? How the Use of Perfumes and Lotions Can Harm Your Skin

Islamabad: In our daily lives, we often use fragrant perfumes, lotions, and other personal care products to feel fresh, enhance our self-image, or leave a good impression on others. However, recent scientific research has revealed an astonishing discovery — these products not only alter our scent but can also severely affect the body’s natural protective layer.
What is the “Oxidation Field” of the Human Body?
Experts from Penn State University and an international research team recently revealed a study highlighting the presence of a natural chemical reaction field around the human body, known as the ‘Human Oxidation Field’. When we are indoors, our body, which is generally warmer than the surrounding environment, attracts air from the atmosphere. The ozone gas in this air interacts with our skin to produce OH radicals. These radicals form an invisible shield that protects us from the harmful effects of ozone.
However, when we use perfumes or even fragrance-free lotions, we disrupt this natural defense system. Research has shown that the organic compounds in these products alter the human oxidation field. Fragrant perfumes immediately dissipate into the air and release OH radicals, while lotions have a more prolonged effect, continuing to interfere with the field. In one experiment, volunteers who used a fragrance-free, regular lotion saw a nearly 140% decrease in OH radicals around their bodies, meaning their natural protective layer became significantly weaker.
Why is This Reaction Dangerous?
This protective oxidation field prevents harmful gases, like ozone, from entering our bodies. When this field is disrupted, secondary chemical reactions can occur, leading to the formation of more unpredictable compounds that we might inhale. Although the full effects of these compounds are not yet understood, experts are warning that they could pose a serious risk to human health.
Given that we spend almost 90% of our time indoors, the quality of indoor air has a profound impact on our health. Research suggests that we are not only affected by external pollution but that our daily habits also play a major role in it.
Precautionary Measures
To mitigate these risks, experts recommend reducing the use of perfumes and lotions or opting for products with natural ingredients. Improving room ventilation can also help enhance air circulation.
While experts emphasize that more research is needed in this field, they urge the public to consider the potential health risks associated with the frequent use of personal care products.
