Pakistan’s Defense Deal with China Boosts Shares of Chinese Companies

Pakistan has revealed its intention to purchase advanced defense equipment from China, including J-35 stealth aircraft, J-500 AWACS aircraft, and the HQ-19 ballistic missile defense system, leading to a significant surge in the shares of Chinese defense companies. According to Bloomberg, this deal marks the first international export of the J-35 aircraft, developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. The J-35 is equipped with advanced stealth capabilities that enable it to penetrate enemy airspace.
**Chinese Companies See Major Share Price Gains**
Shenyang Aircraft Corporation’s shares saw an increase of more than 10%, while shares of other Chinese defense companies also rose by up to 15%. The J-500 AWACS aircraft is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s aerial surveillance capabilities, offering greater flexibility in regional conflicts. Meanwhile, the HQ-19 missile defense system will significantly improve Pakistan’s ability to defend against ballistic missile threats.
**Strengthening Defense Ties Between Pakistan and China**
The Pakistani government recently highlighted the diplomatic successes achieved during Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s tenure. Among these successes were the offers from China to provide 40 J-35 stealth aircraft, 40 KJ-500 AWACS aircraft, and the HQ-19 defense system. Additionally, Pakistan secured a deferral of \$3.7 billion in debt payments from China, and Huawei has committed to training 100,000 Pakistanis in AI and IT fields.
**Pakistan’s Growing Global Defense Trade**
Pakistan has also signed defense agreements with Azerbaijan, including the purchase of 40 JF-17 aircraft for \$2 billion and a \$4.6 billion defense deal. Trade between Pakistan and Iran is also expected to increase, potentially reaching between \$3 to \$10 billion.
**Indonesia Considers Chinese Fighter Jets Amid Regional Tensions**
Meanwhile, Indonesia, a major player in Southeast Asia, is considering the purchase of Chinese J-10C fighter jets, marking a shift from its previous reliance on aircraft from the U.S., Russia, and other countries. Indonesia’s Vice Minister of Defense, Doni Ermawan, confirmed that discussions with China are ongoing, with China offering not only the J-10 jets but also naval vessels, weapons, and other military equipment.
Ermawan also stated that Indonesia is taking into account Pakistan’s recent success in shooting down Indian aircraft with Chinese-made J-10C fighters when making their decision.
**Impact of Defense Deals on Global Markets**
The surge in the stock prices of Chinese defense companies signals the growing influence of China-Pakistan defense ties on the global market. Pakistan’s decision to incorporate cutting-edge technology into its defense systems is expected to elevate its military capabilities, while also contributing to the broader geopolitical landscape.
This evolving defense relationship between Pakistan and China could have far-reaching implications, not only for the two countries but also for regional and global security dynamics.
