Brutal Assault in Karachi’s Defence: Suspects Handed Over to Police on Two-Day Physical Remand Amid “Beat Them” Chants by Lawyers

Karachi: In a significant development in the high-profile assault case from Karachi’s upscale Defence Ittehad Commercial area, two suspects involved in the brutal beating of a young man have been handed over to the police on a two-day physical remand.
The suspects, Salman Farooqi and his associate, were produced before Judicial Magistrate South, Muzzammil Ali Soomro at the City Court by the Gizri Police. Following the hearing, the judge approved the police’s request for remand and asked for a progress report at the next court appearance.
The arrest came after a video of the assault went viral on social media, prompting swift police action. During the court proceedings, when the judge inquired about Farooqi’s legal representation, he named advocate Naeem Qureshi. The hearing was briefly adjourned for 10 minutes due to the lawyer’s absence.
Farooqi’s legal team also submitted a pre-arrest bail request, arguing that the charges were bailable in nature and included only threats under the law.
According to the initial police report, the complainant, Muhammad Saleem, a sales manager at a mobile company, was on a recovery visit in the area when he witnessed a minor collision between a motorcycle and a car. In a fit of rage, Salman Farooqi, the car driver, allegedly physically assaulted the biker, held him at gunpoint with the help of a security guard, and trapped him inside his vehicle. The report also states that women accompanying the victim pleaded for mercy, but were met with verbal abuse, and one woman was physically pushed away.
The disturbing incident, captured by bystanders on video, quickly gained traction on social media and triggered widespread public outrage.
Following the hearing, as police escorted the suspects out of the courtroom, a group of lawyers shouted “Maaro Maaro” (beat them) slogans. In response, police rushed the suspects out of the court premises to avoid any physical altercation.
