E-Cigarettes Linked to Serious Lung Disease, Experts Warn: “Popcorn Lungs” Risk Increases

Health warnings regarding e-cigarettes are rapidly escalating, with many people mistakenly believing they are a safer alternative to traditional smoking. However, doctors are confirming that e-cigarettes can cause serious health issues that may remain with users for life.
According to a report published by *Science Alert* and cited by *Al Arabiya*, a recent case in the U.S. involved a young man who, after secretly vaping e-cigarettes for three years, developed a rare and dangerous medical condition called “Popcorn Lung.”
**What is Popcorn Lung?**
“Popcorn Lung,” also known as *Bronchiolitis Obliterans*, is a rare but severe, irreversible disease that damages the small airways in the lungs, leading to symptoms like persistent coughing, wheezing, fatigue, and difficulty breathing.
The term *Popcorn Lung* originated in the early 21st century when several factory workers in a microwave popcorn plant developed lung problems after inhaling a chemical called *diacetyl*, which was used to give popcorn its buttery flavor. Diacetyl, when inhaled, becomes toxic and causes inflammation and scarring in the bronchioles (the smallest branches of the lungs), making it harder for air to pass through, leading to permanent lung damage.
**Link to E-Cigarettes**
Although diacetyl is the most common cause of this condition, the report confirms that other toxic chemicals found in e-cigarette vapors can also lead to *Popcorn Lung*. E-cigarette liquids often contain a variety of chemicals, including flavoring agents, some of which may be harmful when inhaled. Many of these chemicals are approved for use in food but are not safe for inhalation.
**No Cure for Popcorn Lung**
The report underscores that once the lungs are damaged by *Popcorn Lung*, there is no cure. Treatment options are limited to managing symptoms, and patients are left with lifelong complications. Doctors emphasize that prevention is the best defense, as no treatment can reverse the damage caused by these chemicals.
**E-Cigarette Use Among Teens and Young Adults**
E-cigarettes have become especially popular among teenagers and young adults, partly due to the availability of thousands of flavored e-cigarette products. These e-liquids may contain nicotine, but they also often include chemical compounds designed to attract users, many of which are not safe for inhalation.
The increasing popularity of flavored e-cigarettes has raised alarms about the potential risks, as many of these flavors are approved for consumption in food but have not been evaluated for safety when inhaled into the lungs.
**A Growing Concern**
With vaping-related health issues on the rise, experts are warning that the risks of e-cigarette use go beyond what many initially thought. As the evidence continues to mount, there is growing pressure on authorities to take stronger action in regulating e-cigarette products and their ingredients.
