Aina Asif Sparks Debate on Mental Health Treatment, Calls for Professional Help Over Solely Relying on Prayer

Karachi – Rising star Aina Asif recently made headlines after speaking candidly about mental health and the importance of seeking professional treatment rather than solely relying on religious practices. Appearing on Nida Yasir’s morning show alongside fellow actors Samar Jaffri and Abul Hassan, Aina discussed her personal struggles with mental health and shared her concerns about the approach some therapists take in treating conditions like depression.

Aina, who has become a prominent voice in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, raised a controversial point during the show, emphasizing that while prayer holds great importance in Islam, it should not be viewed as the sole solution for mental health issues. She revealed that on a few occasions, therapists have recommended prayer as a remedy for depression, which she feels is inappropriate for such a serious condition.

She said, “Sometimes, therapists really behave badly. Your child goes for treatment and they tell you to pray.” She continued, “Yes, prayer brings peace, and every Muslim should perform it—it is a beautiful practice. But when I’m depressed, what do I do at that moment?”

Actor Abul Hassan further added to the conversation, agreeing that while prayer does indeed provide comfort, it should not be seen as the only answer to complex mental health issues. He stressed that using the intellect God has blessed us with, mental health conditions should also be treated professionally, just like any physical illness. “You can become closer to God after undergoing therapy,” he noted. “Just as we seek medical treatment for other ailments, we should also seek help for mental health.”

The discussion sparked a range of reactions from social media users. While many supported Aina and Abul’s stance, agreeing that prayer provides solace but mental health issues should not be dismissed, others criticized the actors for discussing religious matters without sufficient knowledge. One user commented, “Now professional actors and influencers will teach us Islam?” Another remarked, “Allah has commanded in the Quran to seek help through patience and prayer.”

There were also many responses emphasizing the role of prayer in addressing life’s challenges. One user shared, “For me, prayer is the ultimate source of peace; it’s a lifetime experience.” Another said, “This is all about our faith and belief. Faith in Allah is a gift that only a few are blessed with.”

The debate highlights the ongoing conversation in Pakistan about mental health, with a growing awareness of the importance of professional treatment, while still maintaining strong religious and spiritual practices.
