Sindh High Court Issues Notices on Petition Against IRSA Formation and Water Availability Certificate

Karachi: The Sindh High Court has issued notices to the federal government and the Attorney General in response to a petition challenging the formation of the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) and the water availability certificate for canals.

During the hearing, the court directed the federal government and the Attorney General to respond by April 7.

Senator Zameer raised the point that the Sindh High Court had previously ruled that there should be two members from Sindh in IRSA. The petitioner’s lawyer argued that due to the unconstitutional formation of IRSA, its decisions hold no legitimacy. He further demanded that the judicial ruling on the appointment of a federal member from Sindh be implemented.

The petitioner contended that as long as a federal member from Sindh is not appointed to IRSA, the formation of the body remains illegal. The petition also seeks to declare the water availability certificate issued by IRSA as null and void.
