Bollywood Film ‘Chhawa’ Sparks Controversy and Heightens Anti-Muslim Sentiments in India

The recent release of Bollywood actor **Vicky Kaushal’s** film *Chhawa*, based on the controversial portrayal of Mughal Emperor **Aurangzeb**, has ignited anti-Muslim sentiments in India. The film has led to an increase in demands for the demolition of Aurangzeb’s tomb in **Nagpur**, escalating tensions and resulting in violent clashes in the region.
According to Indian media reports, protests erupted in Nagpur’s Mahal area when right-wing group **Vishwa Hindu Parishad** (VHP) called for the destruction of Aurangzeb’s tomb. During the protests, slogans were raised, stones were thrown, and several vehicles, including fire brigade trucks, were set on fire. The fire department reported that several firefighters were injured in the chaos.
Following the violence, **Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis** called for peace and order, although he himself supported the demand to demolish the tomb. Police were able to regain control over the situation after their intervention.
The release of *Chhawa* has intensified the controversial discourse surrounding **Aurangzeb**, portraying him as a tyrant, which has led to a surge in anti-Muslim rhetoric. This has also triggered incidents such as blackening the names of roads and places associated with the Mughal emperor, and a wave of hateful comments on social media targeting him.
**Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi** defended Aurangzeb, calling him an efficient administrator, which led to further calls from extremists to demolish his grave. **Fadnavis**, as well as **BJP MPs Adin Rajeh Bhonsle** and **Nwonit Rana**, have supported the demand for the tomb’s destruction, further fueling the controversy.
In recent years, India has witnessed a sharp increase in anti-Muslim hate and violent incidents. Extremist Hindu groups have targeted Muslims through acts of **mob lynching**, attacks on mosques, boycotts of Muslim businesses, and forced conversions to Hinduism.
There have also been reports of **Muslim homes being bulldozed**, street and area names being changed, and restrictions on **hijab-wearing students** in educational institutions. These actions have raised concerns internationally, with **human rights organizations** calling them illegal and discriminatory. The global community has urged the **Indian government** to take immediate action to prevent further oppression against Muslims.
The ongoing situation highlights the growing tension and the rise of religious intolerance in India, drawing significant international attention.
