Security Concerns Lead to Significant Decline in Coal Production in Balochistan

Quetta: Due to ongoing unrest in Balochistan, coal production has seen a significant decline. Over the past year, more than 200 coal mines have been shut down, resulting in coal production dropping from 3.5 million tons annually to just 1.6 million tons.

Officials from the Department of Mines and Minerals have stated that the recent wave of violence in the province has severely impacted the coal industry. Areas like Duki, Harnai, Quetta, and Mach have been particularly affected by insecurity, leading to many miners abandoning the mines. As a result, over 200 coal mines have been closed.

In response to the growing security concerns, the Balochistan government has decided to hire 1,000 security personnel on contract to safeguard the coal mines in Duki. This step is being taken to ensure the safety of the miners and to restore production levels that have been severely impacted by the ongoing unrest.
