Meerut Police Officer’s Controversial Comments on Holi Stir Social Media Debate

In a recent peace committee meeting held in the Indian city of Meerut, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anuj Chaudhary made remarks that have sparked a debate on social media. The meeting, which was attended by leaders from both the Hindu and Muslim communities, aimed to discuss measures to prevent communal tensions during the Holi festival.
Chaudhary stated, “In a year, there are 52 Fridays, but Holi comes only once. If any Muslim feels that the colors of Holi affect their faith, they should stay home on that day.” He further added that just as Muslims eagerly await Eid, Hindus look forward to Holi.
His comments have gone viral on social media, with many expressing their concerns and disagreements. Some feel that such statements could potentially inflame religious sentiments, while others believe the comments were made in the interest of maintaining peace during the festival.
This is not the first time Anuj Chaudhary has been at the center of controversy. He was previously in the spotlight during the riots on November 24, when a survey of the Shahra Mosque was conducted under judicial orders. During the survey, some Hindus claimed the mosque should be recognized as a temple. Chaudhary, in his official uniform, had led a Hindu procession for the survey and was seen holding a Hanuman idol, further intensifying the controversy.
As the debate continues, many are questioning the role of law enforcement in maintaining religious harmony and the potential impact of such statements on communal relations.
