Pakistan Cricket Faces Turmoil with Frequent Changes in Leadership and Coaching Staff

Karachi, Pakistan:Pakistan’s cricket team, once a dominant force in global cricket, has witnessed a significant decline in recent years. The team, which was a consistent contender in major tournaments such as the World Cup and Champions Trophy, has now been relegated to early exits, with their record as the first team to be eliminated from the 2023 Champions Trophy, despite being the host nation.

Similar to the political instability in the country, Pakistan’s cricket board, selectors, coaches, and captains have experienced frequent changes over the past few years. In the last three years alone, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has seen four different chairmen, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the country’s cricket administration.

Since August 2021, 10 former cricketers have served as the national team’s head coaches. Additionally, Pakistan has seen 26 different selectors and 4 different captains for its national team during this turbulent period. This instability has not only affected the team’s performance but also led to growing concerns about the future of Pakistani cricket.

The Chairman of the PCB holds a three-year term, but the position has seen numerous shifts. In December 2022, the role was held by former cricketer Ramiz Raja, a favorite of the PTI government. However, with the change in government, journalist and analyst Najam Sethi took over as chairman. In July 2023, Zaka Ashraf, a favorite of the PPP government, was appointed to the position, followed by Mohsin Naqvi in February 2024, who also serves as the country’s Interior Minister.

The national team’s head coaches have also been regularly changed. Currently, Aaqib Javed serves as the interim head coach, having been appointed in November 2024. Before that, former Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie and former South African cricketer Gary Kirsten held the position from April to December 2024. Other notable coaches in recent years include former Pakistani cricketers like Azhar Mahmood, Mohammad Hafeez, Grant Bradburn, and Mickey Arthur, who served in various periods.

In terms of selectors, Pakistan has seen 26 different selectors since August 2021, with 5 chief selectors, including Wahab Riaz, who served as the last chief selector. Currently, the six-member selection committee is working without a permanent chief selector, with notable members including Aleem Dar, Aaqib Javed, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, and Hassan Cheema.

The captaincy of Pakistan’s national team has also been subject to change. Babar Azam, once the undisputed captain of all three formats, was removed in 2023, with Shaheen Afridi appointed as the captain for white-ball formats and Shan Masood for Test cricket. However, before the T20 World Cup in March 2024, Babar Azam was reinstated as the captain of the white-ball team. But just eight months later, in November 2024, wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan was named the captain of the white-ball team.

This continuous leadership upheaval has raised questions about the future stability and consistency of Pakistan’s cricket team, with many fans and experts calling for a more organized and structured approach to the sport’s administration.
