Asia Cup at Risk? Sunil Gavaskar Raises Concerns Over ACC’s Future Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

New Delhi:Cricket legend and former Indian captain **Sunil Gavaskar** has voiced serious concerns about the **future of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC)**, questioning its viability if both **India and Pakistan refuse to participate** in the upcoming **Asia Cup 2025**.
Speaking in light of **escalating political tensions** between the two nations, Gavaskar stated that **Pakistan’s participation in the Asia Cup**, scheduled for **September** in **India and Sri Lanka**, remains uncertain.
> “Given the current situation, there is a real possibility that Pakistan may not play in the Asia Cup. And if India also decides to pull out, it would be a major blow,” said Gavaskar. “In that case, the ACC could fall apart.”
He suggested that if Pakistan withdraws, India might still go ahead and host the tournament by inviting other Asian teams to compete domestically.
### Geopolitical Tensions Threatening Cricket Diplomacy
The ongoing strain in India-Pakistan relations has once again thrown regional cricket events into jeopardy. This would not be the first time political dynamics have influenced cross-border sports. In the past, both countries have **boycotted events** or **pushed for neutral venues** due to diplomatic rifts.
Gavaskar’s remarks underline a growing fear that **sports diplomacy may be weakening**, and regional cricket bodies like the ACC could lose relevance if they can’t keep their top members engaged.
### Asia Cup’s Fate Hangs in Balance
The final decision on team participation is expected in the coming months. The ACC has not yet made an official statement regarding any change in plans, but the issue is expected to be discussed in the next executive meeting.
