Cold Wave Intensifies as Temperature Drops to Minus 11°C in Skardu
Islamabad: A severe cold wave continues to grip Pakistan, with temperatures dropping significantly across the country. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the weather in most parts of the country is expected to remain cold and dry over the next 24 hours.
In the northern mountainous regions, the intensity of the cold has reached alarming levels, with temperatures in Skardu plummeting to a chilling minus 11°C. Meanwhile, temperatures in Quetta and Kalat remained at 5°C, while Malam Jabba and Dera recorded temperatures of 3°C. There is also a possibility of rain in certain areas.
In Lahore, despite the cold weather, air pollution remains a major issue. The city, known as the “City of Gardens,” continues to be the second most polluted city in the world. The current temperature in Lahore is recorded at 9°C, with a minimum of 5°C and a maximum of 20°C expected. The humidity level is at 70%, and the wind speed is 5 km/h.
Lahore is ranked first in Pakistan for air pollution, with the average smog level recorded at 273, significantly affecting air quality. Meanwhile, Karachi is also experiencing cold and dry conditions, with the current temperature recorded at 14°C. The meteorological department forecasts further drop in temperatures in the coming days.
According to the Air Quality Index (AQI), Karachi ranks 11th among the world’s most polluted cities, and sixth in Pakistan. The level of particulate matter in the air has reached 166 micrograms per cubic meter, posing serious health risks.
