Pakistan Presents Oral Arguments at ICJ on State Responsibilities Regarding Climate Change
Islamabad:Pakistan’s Attorney General, Mansoor Usman Awan, presented oral arguments today at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, related to the advisory opinion on state responsibilities concerning climate change. The case, initiated as part of a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, seeks to clarify the obligations of states in addressing the global challenges posed by environmental changes.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, **Mumtaz Zahra Baloch**, Pakistan’s presentation emphasized the urgent need for international cooperation to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. The country called for the adoption of cooperative strategies based on principles of equity, common but differentiated responsibilities, and respective capabilities (CBDR-RC).
The spokesperson further explained that the ICJ’s advisory opinion could provide valuable guidance to states on the legal responsibilities they share in combating the climate crisis. Baloch underscored that Pakistan’s participation in these proceedings is a clear demonstration of the country’s commitment to addressing climate change challenges in collaboration with the international community.
Through its presentation, Pakistan highlighted the pressing threats posed by climate change, stressing the importance of multilateral efforts to tackle this global issue effectively.
