462 New HIV Cases Reported in Balochistan, Total Registered Cases Reach 2,823

QUETTA:Dr. Zulfiqar Baloch, Provincial Coordinator of the AIDS Control Program, revealed that 462 new cases of HIV have been reported in Balochistan, bringing the total number of registered HIV patients in the province to 2,823. In a press conference held yesterday, Dr. Baloch, along with other officials, stated that six districts in Balochistan have been identified as high-risk areas for the disease.

Dr. Baloch emphasized the need for increased awareness about HIV, particularly as World AIDS Day is observed globally on December 1st. He explained that HIV weakens the immune system, making the body susceptible to life-threatening infections, and without timely treatment, it can become fatal.

The Coordinator further disclosed that Quetta has the highest number of registered cases, followed by Turbat, Hub, Loralai, and Naseerabad. The high-risk districts identified for HIV spread include Quetta, Gwadar, Turbat, Zhob, Sherani, and Naseerabad.

Dr. Baloch also warned that the actual number of HIV cases in the province could be between 7,000 and 9,000, significantly higher than the current registered figure. To tackle the rising number of cases, the Provincial AIDS Control Program plans to establish treatment centers in Khuzdar, Zhob, Kharan, and Sibi to improve access to healthcare and treatment for patients.

Additionally, Dr. Baloch stated that HIV testing kits are available in all districts of Balochistan, and over 100,000 individuals were screened for the virus last year. Testing was also carried out in district and central jails. He emphasized that efforts are ongoing to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment to prevent the spread of the disease.
