TikTok Imposes Ban on Beauty Filters for Users Under 18 to Protect Mental Health

Islamabad:TikTok has announced new restrictions that will prevent users under the age of 18 from using beauty filters designed to enhance physical appearance. The company stated that this move is part of its efforts to protect young users from the potential mental health issues linked to the overuse of such filters.

The new policy will block access to filters that smooth skin, enlarge eyes, slim down noses, and make other changes to enhance a user’s appearance. These beauty filters, often used to alter real-time video and images, have become increasingly popular on social media platforms, but they are also linked to rising concerns about body image, especially among younger audiences.

TikTok’s decision follows growing awareness of the negative impact that the widespread use of beauty-enhancing filters can have on self-esteem and mental health. The company believes that limiting access to such tools for minors will help combat issues such as body dysmorphia and unrealistic beauty standards.

However, the age restriction will not apply to filters created for purely entertainment purposes. TikTok clarified that users will still have access to fun and creative filters, but those that modify their appearance to an idealized standard will be blocked for users under 18.

Additionally, TikTok plans to implement machine learning technology that will help identify accounts belonging to children under the age of 13. This system is expected to enhance the platform’s ability to comply with child safety regulations and further safeguard younger users.

This step by TikTok is part of the platform’s broader commitment to promoting user well-being and mental health, especially for its young and impressionable audience.
