“Their Aim is to Turn Pakistan into Europe”: Public Outrage Over Alleged Bold Fashion Show at Iqra University
Karachi: A viral video circulating on social media has sparked public outrage over an alleged fashion show held at Iqra University, where Western-style clothing was showcased. Many social media users have strongly criticized the event, deeming the outfits inappropriate for an educational institution in Pakistan.
Critics expressed their displeasure over the hosting of such a fashion show at a university, with one user remarking, “How is such a fashion show allowed to take place in Pakistan?” Another user, Sadia Anjum, accused the organizers of attempting to “turn Pakistan into Europe.”
One comment pointed out the irony of such an event being held at Iqra University, given the name “Iqra,” which is traditionally associated with learning in Islamic culture. Other users questioned the appropriateness of the attire, with Taiba Shaikh drawing comparisons between the clothes worn in the fashion show and those typically worn by Indian models and actresses.
Some criticized the event as promoting “open indecency” and argued that such activities are not in line with the educational values of a country like Pakistan. One user remarked, “Is this the kind of education that makes a person successful?” Another expressed concerns about the influence of cultural events, stating that educational institutions often host activities such as Holi celebrations or weddings, which they believe contribute to the moral decay of the younger generation.
This controversy follows a similar incident earlier this year when a video from the Jinnah University for Women went viral, showing the university’s chancellor hosting his daughter’s wedding ceremony on campus, complete with dance performances. The video also sparked widespread criticism on social media.
