“The Same Government Stood With Maulana Fazlur Rehman During 26th and 27th Amendments,” Says Anchor Muhammad Malik

LAHORE: Senior analyst and television anchor Muhammad Malik has questioned the changing political relationship between Maulana Fazlur Rehman and government circles, saying the same government that is now criticising the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief had stood alongside him during the passage of the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments.

Speaking on a private television programme, Muhammad Malik said that when the constitutional amendments were being introduced, government representatives had repeatedly praised Maulana Fazlur Rehman, describing him as a politically astute and highly capable politician.

He remarked that the same Maulana Fazlur Rehman, whose political wisdom was once appreciated by government circles, was now facing allegations involving the use of religious sentiments, corruption and questionable activities.

Malik alleged that the names of Allah and the Holy Prophet (PBUH) were also being brought into political disputes and questioned the involvement of business figures who had allegedly been accused of illegal activities and corruption.

Raising questions about the situation, he asked what was actually happening behind the scenes and whether the matter was simply a dispute between political parties or part of an attempt by the government to silence the remaining voices of the opposition.

He also expressed concern that the government might be pursuing a strategy to completely silence the opposition once and for all.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Senator Mohsin Naqvi has issued a strong response to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s recent statements regarding the state.

Speaking during a Senate session, Naqvi said he had personally held Maulana Fazlur Rehman in high regard, but his remarks about the state had left no room for that respect.

The interior minister alleged that Maulana Fazlur Rehman considered the state like a mother when he received benefits and privileges from it, but began criticising the state and its institutions when he was not given a share in power.

Naqvi said that the state remained a source of benefits for certain political figures as long as they continued to receive positions and resources, but became a target of criticism when they were excluded from the government.

He further said that JUI-F would no longer receive jobs, financial benefits or election tickets from the state, adding that Maulana Fazlur Rehman had crossed a red line and would now be given a response on every matter.
