Current Government Has Imposed Martial Law Under the Guise of Democracy, Says JUI-F Spokesperson

Aslam Ghauri Condemns Blackout of Fazlur Rehman’s National Assembly Speech, Warns Rulers Against Undermining Parliament and Democratic Freedoms

ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) spokesperson Aslam Ghauri has strongly condemned the blackout of party chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s speech on the floor of the National Assembly, describing the incident as a serious insult to the public, Parliament, democracy and freedom of expression.

In a strongly worded statement, Ghauri alleged that the current rulers had reduced Parliament to a dummy institution and that the government, despite presenting itself as democratic, was effectively operating under authoritarian control.

He questioned the direction in which the country was being taken through measures such as restricting the speeches of elected representatives inside Parliament, alleged large-scale rigging in general elections and the issuance of threat letters during election campaigns.

“The present government is using tactics resembling the imposition of martial law behind the cover of democracy,” he alleged, describing such actions as an injustice to the country and its people.

JUI-F Warns Against Undermining Democracy

Ghauri warned those attempting to politically marginalise JUI-F that they should recognise the growing public discontent and reconsider their approach.

He questioned why the Constitution, Parliament, freedom and democratic institutions were being treated with such disregard, and why the government appeared determined to undermine what he described as a fragile and ineffective democratic system.

He said JUI-F’s predecessors had never accepted what he termed the illegitimate domination of the British, adding that the party would not accept the domination of present-day rulers or their political proxies.

Criticism of PML-N Over Democratic Promises

The JUI-F spokesperson also criticised the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), saying its leaders had repeatedly raised the slogan of “respect the vote” but had abandoned democratic traditions and values after coming to power.

He alleged that the principle of parliamentary supremacy had been reduced to a joke.

Warning the rulers against escalating the confrontation, Ghauri said they should not take matters to a point where they might later struggle to face public criticism.

“Ungrateful rulers come pleading at people’s feet when they are helpless, but once they gain power, they start grabbing the collars of the public and their allies,” he said.

Ghauri warned that JUI-F would no longer tolerate such conduct and would go to every extent necessary to protect the Constitution and democracy.

He reiterated that restrictions on parliamentary debate and freedom of expression were unacceptable and urged the government to respect democratic principles and the authority of Parliament.
