Blackout During Fazlur Rehman’s Speech Violates Democratic Values, Freedom of Expression: Maulana Abdul Wasey
JUI-F Balochistan Chief Demands Explanation Over Alleged Muting of Speech and Suspension of National Assembly’s Live Broadcast

QUETTA: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Balochistan chief Senator Maulana Abdul Wasey has expressed serious concern over the alleged muting of JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s speech in the National Assembly and the interruption of its live broadcast.
In a statement, Senator Abdul Wasey said responding to a reasoned and effective political stance by blacking out its broadcast was contrary to democratic values and freedom of expression.
He said serious questions had arisen over the incident after the speaker of the National Assembly mentioned Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s name, following which the audio was allegedly cut off and the assembly’s live coverage interrupted.
The senator maintained that the strength of Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s arguments was so evident that those in positions of power appeared unable to confront them.
He added that stopping the broadcast of a political leader’s speech could not prevent his position from reaching the public.
Senator Abdul Wasey emphasised that parliament was the highest forum of public representation, where elected representatives should have a full opportunity to express their views and communicate their positions to the people.
He demanded that the authorities provide a clear explanation to the public regarding the alleged interruption of the broadcast during Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s speech in the National Assembly.
The JUI-F Balochistan chief further stressed that respect for dissent and protection of freedom of expression were essential in a democratic society.
He said using a broadcast blackout to respond to a political position was incompatible with democratic traditions and principles.
