Quetta’s Famous Recreation Spot Hanna Lake Begins to Dry Up Due to Lack of Rain

Quetta — Hanna Lake, which has been a center of attraction for tourists due to its clear water, exciting rowing competitions, and beautiful migratory birds, is losing its natural beauty and drying up due to severe water scarcity and prolonged absence of rain. A large portion of the famous Hanna Lake, located about 13 kilometers from Quetta, has already dried up. Tourists coming from Quetta and various other cities have expressed disappointment and deep regret over the deteriorating condition of the lake.

Due to the water shortage, the future of hundreds of rowing and canoeing athletes is becoming bleak, and the livelihoods of those associated with rowing, water adventure sports tourism, and businesses dependent on tourism are also being severely affected. Environmental experts have expressed fear that due to water scarcity and continuous drought, the future of hundreds of rowing, canoeing, and kayaking athletes of Hayat Durrani Water Sports Academy — the first and only international water sports academy in Balochistan province — is becoming bleak. Hundreds of trees planted over several decades under the environmental protection project by Hayat Durrani Academy are also being affected, while migratory birds, nearby orchards, and the natural environment are also suffering severe damage.

The head of the academy has demanded that the time has come to take effective and timely measures to remove the silt accumulated over various years from Hanna Lake and store as much water as possible.
