Kamran Murtaza Reveals PTI Talks Were Near Conclusion Before KP Emergency Move

ISLAMABAD: Senior Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader and Senator Kamran Murtaza has expressed surprise and concern over the federal government’s move to impose an emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming that negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had nearly reached a breakthrough.

Speaking about the political developments, Kamran Murtaza said the government had acted hastily and taken an excessive step despite significant progress in backchannel negotiations. He maintained that the move had undermined the political process at a time when the parties were close to reaching an understanding.

According to the JUI-F leader, PTI had agreed to step back from several key demands and fundamental points during the negotiations. He also revealed that PTI had given JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman the green light and full authority to take the talks forward and bring them to a conclusion.

Kamran Murtaza disclosed that a conference call with PTI leaders had taken place during the night. He said Maulana Fazlur Rehman had remained awake throughout the night and, as contact with the government could not be established at that time, personally approached the government in the morning to brief it on the progress made.

He further claimed that the points agreed upon by the negotiating parties the previous day were close to meeting the federal government’s expectations and demands.

“The government has acted in haste and committed an injustice. PTI had stepped back on certain issues, and what we had agreed upon was also close to satisfying the government,” Kamran Murtaza said.

The senator questioned why the government had suddenly changed course when the deadlock had reportedly been resolved and negotiations were nearing a conclusion.

He described the decision to proceed with the emergency and Governor’s Rule in KP without taking the negotiating parties into confidence as unexpected and difficult to understand.

Kamran Murtaza said the government’s unilateral move had raised questions about its intentions, particularly given the positive developments achieved through dialogue.

He stressed that the progress made during negotiations should have been taken into account before making such a consequential political decision.
