Mazamil Aslam Takes Dig at Pakistani Rulers Over Lavish Protocol During Guterres Visit

ISLAMABAD: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ arrival in Pakistan has sparked debate over the lavish lifestyle and official protocol enjoyed by Pakistani rulers, after a video showing the UN chief carrying his own trolley bag at Islamabad airport went viral on social media.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Adviser for Finance Mazamil Aslam took a sarcastic swipe at Pakistani political leaders, comparing Guterres’ simplicity with the expensive travel arrangements and protocol often used by government officials.

Commenting on Guterres’ arrival on social media platform X, Aslam wrote, “The next person has arrived from New York on a commercial flight, while the Chief Minister of Punjab has to travel from Lahore to Bhakkar in a Gulfstream 500.”

The KP finance adviser’s remarks were aimed at what he described as the use of luxury aircraft, helicopters and extensive official protocol by government figures, contrasting it with the UN secretary-general’s modest approach.

Guterres has arrived in Pakistan on a three-day visit. A video of his arrival at Islamabad airport has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention to his simple and humble conduct.

The video shows Guterres carrying his own trolley bag as he walked out of the airport lounge without relying on heavy protocol or a large entourage.

The sight has attracted praise and surprise from people on social media and in political and social circles, particularly in a country where even relatively junior officials and public figures are often associated with elaborate protocol and displays of privilege.

Guterres’ conduct has consequently been portrayed as an example of humility and simplicity, with commentators arguing that stature does not depend on protocol or luxury but on modesty and dignity.
