Sindh Government Decides to Seek NCCIA Help to Curb Fake News

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to seek assistance from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to curb fake news and misleading information.
The decision was taken during an important meeting of the Sindh Information Department chaired by Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Sheikh, Director General Information Moez Pirzada and all directors of the department attended the meeting.
Sharjeel Memon made it clear that attempts to harm any individual or institution through false and misleading information would not be tolerated.
The senior minister directed the Information Secretary and directors of all wings of the Information Department to monitor fake news and formulate an effective media strategy.
He ordered that assistance from the NCCIA be sought to prevent fake and misleading information. Fake news on mainstream and social media platforms will be monitored on a daily basis with the help of modern technology, he said.
Memon said an effective monitoring system would be developed within the Information Department for the identification, verification and timely response to fake news.
He added that cooperation between the Sindh Information Department and the NCCIA would be further strengthened to counter fake news.
The minister said NCCIA assistance would also be sought for legal action against those involved in creating and spreading fake news.
According to Memon, the Sindh government’s narrative is based on peace, tolerance, inter-provincial harmony and national unity.
He directed the Information Department to take additional measures to make the provincial government’s narrative more effective and stronger and to use modern communication tools to highlight its positive and constructive initiatives.
The senior minister also called for representatives of all segments of society to be included in the government’s communication efforts. He said the Information Department should focus not only on monitoring fake news but also on effectively promoting the Sindh government’s positive narrative.
