Pakistan Playing Role in Efforts to End Middle East Conflict: Foreign Secretary
NEW YORK:Pakistan’s new Foreign Secretary Asim Iftikhar Ahmad has said that the country is taking on additional responsibilities under the Makkah Agreement and is aware that the situation in the region is moving in a negative direction.
Speaking to Geo News in New York, Asim Iftikhar said Pakistan was playing a role in efforts to end the conflict in the Middle East and was seeking a peaceful solution in accordance with international law and the principles of the United Nations.
“We want a ceasefire, a reduction in tensions and to bring the parties to the negotiating table,” he said, adding that the UN Security Council Charter calls for disputes to be resolved through dialogue rather than war.
Regarding the Makkah Agreement, the foreign secretary said the agreement involved three countries and required Pakistan to assume additional responsibilities. He acknowledged that the regional situation was deteriorating and said Pakistan understood the need to play its role.
“Our objective is peace and stability in the region,” Asim Iftikhar said. He noted that the world had been closely watching the Iran-US conflict and said Pakistan was among the countries that had played a prominent role in efforts related to the dispute.
The foreign secretary also said that the conflicts in Palestine and Kashmir should be resolved in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
He rejected the impression that the United Nations was not playing a role in promoting peace, saying international efforts and the UN framework remained important for resolving conflicts and maintaining regional stability.
