US Removes Syria from State Sponsors of Terrorism List After Nearly 47 Years

The United States has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism nearly 47 years after the country was placed on the list.

According to a foreign news agency, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the decision was made in recognition of the Syrian government’s declaration that it has completely severed ties with terrorist groups.

The United States has also removed Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former organization of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, from its list of international terrorist organizations.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani described the US decision as a historic step.

He said the Syrian government would continue working to establish an environment based on transparency, mutual interests and respect.

Meanwhile, Shaibani announced a day earlier that Syria had suspended negotiations with Israel, saying Damascus’s top priority was to stop Israeli aggression before reaching a security agreement.

He said Syria could not continue negotiations with Israel under the current circumstances.
