JUI-F, Tehreek Tahafuz Aain Pakistan Agree to Form United Opposition
Alliance to Begin From Parliament; Imran Khan’s Health Also Discussed During Meeting
ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the Tehreek Tahafuz Aain Pakistan have agreed to form a united opposition alliance, with the process set to begin in Parliament.
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, accompanied by opposition leaders, announced the formation of the opposition alliance while speaking to the media after an important meeting between the two sides.
According to sources, a joint parliamentary party meeting of opposition parties will also be held on Friday, while the opposition alliance will meet Maulana Fazlur Rehman as part of further consultations.
Sources said the meeting also discussed the health condition of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and chairman Imran Khan.
Speaking to the media, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said it was the opposition’s first meeting and that the participants had agreed in principle to form a united opposition.
“This was the first sitting, and further consultations will take place,” he said.
Asked whether the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would be part of the alliance, Maulana Fazlur Rehman said the PPP was part of the government, whereas they were talking about an opposition alliance.
He also said that discussions should be held on convening an All Parties Conference.
When a journalist asked whether the opposition would join hands on the streets as well as in Parliament, Maulana Fazlur Rehman responded humorously, “We are reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, and you have already reached Surah An-Naas.”
The opposition parties are expected to hold further consultations to finalize the structure and future course of action of the proposed united opposition.
