Pakistan Army Inducts Z-10ME Attack Helicopter to Rival US-Made Apache

Islamabad: In a significant development, the Pakistan Army has inducted the advanced Z-10ME attack helicopter into its fleet, marking a major milestone in modernizing its aviation capabilities. The announcement was made during the visit of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir to the Multan Garrison.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Z-10ME is a state-of-the-art attack helicopter designed to operate in all weather conditions, including night missions, with high precision targeting abilities. Its inclusion in the Pakistan Army’s aviation fleet strengthens the force’s combat readiness and modernizes its attack helicopter capabilities.
Z-10ME: On Par with Apache
The Z-10ME, developed by China, is being compared to the US-made Apache attack helicopter in terms of its capabilities. Following successful trials by the Pakistan Army Aviation, China upgraded the Z-10 helicopter in September 2018 and introduced the Z-10ME as an export version. The upgraded version features a new millimeter-wave radar, enhanced weapons systems, and various electronic modifications.

The cannon mount location and caliber on the Z-10ME have been improved, and the cannon’s bomb bay has been moved to the rear side of the pilot’s cabin, optimizing the helicopter’s center of gravity. The Z-10ME also boasts six external hardpoints, capable of carrying various air-to-ground and air-to-air weapons, with a total payload capacity of up to three tons.

**Key Features of the Z-10ME:**

1. **CM501XA Cruise Missile:**
One of the standout features of the Z-10ME is its capability to carry the CM501XA cruise missile. This versatile missile can be used for reconnaissance as well as strike missions, providing operational flexibility to the forces. Equipped with an X-shaped radar, it enhances its maneuverability and targeting capabilities. The CM501XA can be deployed against high-priority, time-sensitive targets, such as missile-launching vehicles, using data links to communicate targeting information.

2. **SW6 UAV:**
The Z-10ME is also capable of launching the SW6 UAV, a small-sized reconnaissance drone that can operate independently after launch. The SW6 UAV is 1.6 meters long with a wingspan of 2.4 meters. It can carry a payload of up to 5 kilograms, fly at speeds of 80 to 100 km/h, and has a continuous flight endurance of up to one hour.

3. **Anti-Submarine Warfare:**
Another notable feature of the Z-10ME is its ability to carry the lightweight ET60 torpedo for anti-submarine warfare. Known as “Fish Fight,” the ET60 torpedo has a speed of 50 km/h and a range of 25 km, significantly enhancing the helicopter’s versatility in naval operations.

4. **Additional Weaponry:**
The Z-10ME can also carry various air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, including the TY-90 air-to-air missiles, CM502A air-to-ground missiles, and VX fire-and-forget missiles, which are comparable to the US-made Hellfire (AGM-114L). Additionally, it can carry both guided and unguided munitions, making it a formidable combat platform.

5. **Powerful Engine:**
The Z-10ME is powered by an upgraded WZ-9 engine, which delivers 1200 to 1300 kW of power, making it at least 30% more powerful than its base variant. This engine enhancement improves its flight performance, weapon load capacity, and operational effectiveness, especially in high-temperature and high-altitude regions.

**Operational Enhancements:**

The Z-10ME’s engine features advanced air intake systems, including centrifugal sand filters for better protection in desert and dusty environments. The upgraded exhaust system has been designed to reduce infrared signature, making the helicopter more elusive to infrared-guided missiles—an essential advantage in modern combat, where shoulder-fired short-range infrared anti-aircraft missiles pose a significant threat to attack helicopters.

**A Step Towards Modernization:**

The induction of the Z-10ME reflects Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing its military capabilities with cutting-edge technology. With its advanced features and enhanced combat capabilities, the Z-10ME is poised to strengthen Pakistan Army’s aviation division and provide a significant boost to its operational flexibility across various combat domains.
