Power Tariff Hike of Rs2.52 per Unit Sought From NEPRA

ISLAMABAD: The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase of Rs2.52 per unit in electricity tariffs for consumers across Pakistan.

According to a NEPRA statement, the CPPA filed the request under the fuel price adjustment for July.

The application states that electricity generated from imported LNG cost Rs47.37 per unit in July. A total of Rs77.19 billion worth of electricity was generated from LNG, accounting for 10.78% of total power generation.

Meanwhile, furnace oil accounted for 1.42% of electricity generation, with the cost of generation reaching Rs50.07 per unit. Electricity worth Rs10.77 billion was generated from furnace oil.

According to the CPPA, hydropower contributed 39.81% of total generation, local coal 10.91%, imported coal 14.38% and nuclear sources 10.10%. The fuel cost of nuclear power generation stood at Rs3.02 per unit.

The application also stated that electricity was generated from diesel in July. Around 31 million units were produced using diesel, with the cost reaching Rs54.47 per unit.

NEPRA said a hearing on the CPPA’s request would be held on August 27. If approved, the proposed increase would place an additional burden of approximately Rs41 billion, including GST, on electricity consumers.
