Faulty Streetlights on Quetta’s Major Roads Leave Citizens Facing Serious Difficulties at Night

QUETTA: Citizens are facing serious difficulties at night due to malfunctioning streetlights on major roads and streets across the provincial capital, including Jinnah Road and Shahrah-e-Iqbal.

Residents said streetlights on numerous roads and streets had remained out of order for a long time, leaving pedestrians, women, elderly people and motorcyclists struggling to move safely after dark.

They said darkness on major and busy roads was also increasing the risk of traffic accidents and creating serious concerns about public safety. Citizens said they felt increasingly vulnerable while travelling through poorly lit areas at night.

Residents questioned the performance of the city administration, saying that despite claims of spending millions of rupees on development projects, a basic municipal facility such as functioning streetlights remained unavailable on several important roads.

The malfunctioning lights on Jinnah Road and Shahrah-e-Iqbal are particularly concerning, citizens said, as both are major commercial and public routes used by large numbers of people throughout the day and night.

They also expressed concern that poorly lit streets could provide opportunities for criminal elements to operate, further increasing insecurity among residents.

Citizens have urged Balochistan Chief Minister, the Quetta Administrator and other senior officials to take immediate notice of the situation, conduct an emergency survey of faulty streetlights across the city and restore them without delay.

They stressed that the authorities should move beyond paperwork and establish an effective system for the regular maintenance, inspection and repair of streetlights to prevent the problem from recurring.

Quetta residents demanded immediate action to ensure that the provincial capital is not left in darkness and that major roads and residential areas are properly illuminated and made safer for the public.
