Jamaat-e-Islami Announces 15-Day Sit-In Against Petroleum Levy in Sindh

KARACHI:Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a sit-in outside the Sindh Governor House today to protest against the government’s failure to reduce the petroleum levy. The party has also prepared a **15-day schedule** for the protest.
Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said rising petroleum prices lead to an increase in the cost of almost everything, placing an additional burden on the public.
He said the country’s elite class does not pay taxes while ordinary citizens continue to struggle with rising costs. He alleged that privileged groups receive various benefits for free, while taxes are not being properly collected from the incomes of owners of independent power producers (IPPs).
In a statement, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Munim Zafar said the government had already collected nearly **Rs100 billion more than its set target** through the petroleum levy.
He alleged that the government, having failed to meet its tax collection targets, had turned the petroleum levy into a major source of revenue.
Jamaat-e-Islami will also hold a protest sit-in against the petroleum levy at **Charing Cross on The Mall Road in Lahore**.
