NADRA Introduces New QR Code-Based National Identity Card

ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has introduced a new QR code-based national identity card developed and manufactured in Pakistan.

According to a NADRA statement, the new identity card is made from locally produced polycarbonate material and replaces the imported microchip used in the existing card with a secure QR code.

The QR code will enable identity verification through an ordinary smartphone. The QR code on the new card can also be scanned and verified through the Pak ID mobile application.

NADRA said the QR code will contain relevant identity information and the cardholder’s photograph. The system is expected to reduce errors in the entry of names, addresses and other identification data.

Telecom companies, banks, hospitals, railways, police and other authorized institutions will be provided with software to verify identities through the QR code.

The new identity card will also feature specific markings for family numbers, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and organ donors. Separate markings will also identify citizens of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The QR code-based card is being issued in phases from August 14, replacing the existing national identity card system.

NADRA said the cardholder’s name and address will be printed in both Urdu and English.

From January 2027, the QR code-based card will also be introduced for all types of national identity cards, including the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and Smart/other existing card variants.

In the final phase, the Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will also be shifted to the new chip-free, QR code-based format.

NADRA clarified that identity cards already issued will remain valid until their stated expiry dates.
