Security Concerns Temporarily Suspend Several Passenger Bus Services Between Balochistan and Karachi

QUETTA: Several passenger bus services operating between different districts of Balochistan, Quetta and Karachi have been temporarily suspended due to security concerns, causing difficulties for thousands of travellers.

According to sources, numerous buses operating from Kharan, Panjgur, Washuk, Basima, Turbat, Gwadar and other areas to Quetta and Karachi will remain off the roads from August 8 to August 16.

Public transport services on the Quetta-Panjgur, Quetta-Gwadar and Quetta-Turbat routes have also reportedly been suspended.

Transport sources said various companies decided to temporarily halt long-distance passenger services in view of the prevailing security situation. The suspension includes buses travelling from Kharan to Quetta and Karachi, as well as several passenger services connecting southern and western districts of Balochistan with Karachi.

Thousands of Travellers Affected

The suspension is expected to affect thousands of residents of Kharan, Panjgur, Washuk, Basima and surrounding areas who regularly travel to Quetta and Karachi for medical treatment, education, business, employment and official matters.

Patients and their attendants travelling to major hospitals in Quetta and Karachi are likely to face particular difficulties because of the lack of regular long-distance transport. Students, government employees, businesspeople and workers travelling for employment may also be affected.

Sources said passengers may have to seek alternative modes of transport following the sudden suspension. However, limited alternatives could make travel more difficult and expensive.

Karachi-Balochistan Routes Also Affected

The suspension is not limited to buses travelling from Balochistan to Quetta or Karachi. Several services operating from Karachi to southern and western districts of Balochistan have also reportedly been halted.

Passenger services on the Karachi-Turbat, Karachi-Gwadar, Karachi-Panjgur, Karachi-Kharan and Karachi-Basima routes are also expected to remain suspended.

The disruption has affected an important means of passenger movement between Sindh and Balochistan. Balochistan residents living in Karachi may face difficulties travelling to their hometowns, while people from different districts of Balochistan who need to travel to Karachi will also be affected.

The suspension could also have an impact on business activities, passenger movement and the transportation of goods and essential items.

Transporters Cite Safety Concerns

Transporters said the safety of passengers, drivers, conductors and other transport staff was their top priority. They noted that long-distance buses have to pass through sensitive areas and highways, prompting them to suspend services as a precautionary measure.

Transporters have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in view of the security situation. Those who need to travel have been advised to contact their respective transport companies before departure to confirm route conditions and the availability of bus services.

According to sources, the current suspension schedule covers August 8 to August 16, although services could be restored earlier if the security situation improves or relevant authorities issue new instructions.
