JD Vance Says Iran Has Assured US It Will Not Charge Fees on Ships Using Strait of Hormuz
US Vice President JD Vance has claimed that Iran has assured the United States that it does not intend to impose any tolls or fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Vance made the remarks in an interview with Fox News, saying that some elements within the Iranian system had discussed the possibility of charging fees to ships using the strategic waterway, but that no such charges are currently being imposed.
The US vice president said he expects oil and gas shipments from the Gulf region to global markets to return to roughly the same levels seen before the war once the conflict ends.
Vance’s comments come as Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has presented the United States with a new set of stringent conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Iranian council, the waterway will remain closed until Washington changes its approach toward Tehran.
Iran has demanded that the United States pledge not to threaten Iran in the future, permanently end military action against Iran and its regional allies, lift the alleged naval blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw US forces from the region.
Tehran has also demanded full compensation for losses suffered during the wars in 2025 and 2026, the lifting of all US sanctions and the unconditional return of Iranian assets frozen abroad.
The contrasting statements highlight the complex negotiations surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments.
