Adiala Jail Superintendent Denies Imran Khan Is in Solitary Confinement in Report Submitted to Court
Islamabad: The Superintendent of Adiala Jail has submitted a report to the Islamabad High Court rejecting claims that former Prime Minister and PTI founder Imran Khan is being held in solitary confinement as he completes three years in prison.
According to the report filed before the court, the jail superintendent stated that Pakistan’s prison system no longer generally practices solitary confinement and that courts no longer award such punishment. The report maintains that no inmate at Adiala Jail, including Imran Khan, is being kept in solitary confinement and that he is serving his sentence in accordance with the law.
The superintendent further stated that Imran Khan is being treated under the same legal framework as other prisoners and is not being subjected to discriminatory or unequal treatment. However, the report notes that he has been provided with certain additional facilities because of his classification as a better-class prisoner and enhanced security arrangements due to his status as a former prime minister and political leader.
According to the report, ordinary inmates are not allowed access to Imran Khan’s residential block for security reasons. It says he is housed in a seven-cell compound where he is free to move during the day and remains inside his cell only during designated nighttime lock-up hours.
The report also states that jail officials remain in regular contact with him regarding his needs, while the deputy superintendent meets him routinely and whenever necessary. It adds that prison doctors examine him three times a day, inspect his meals, and monitor his blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and other vital health indicators. Additional medical examinations are conducted whenever required.
The superintendent further informed the court that a convicted inmate has been assigned to prepare three daily meals according to Imran Khan’s preferred menu.
The report has been submitted in response to a petition concerning allegations of solitary confinement. The case is scheduled to be heard by Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro of the Islamabad High Court on Thursday.
