PMDC Approves 475 New Seats in Punjab’s Public Medical Colleges
Lahore: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has approved 475 additional seats in public medical colleges across Punjab, a move expected to expand access to affordable medical education for thousands of students.
According to officials, the addition of the new seats will increase the total number of admissions in government medical colleges to nearly 4,000. The decision is expected to benefit students who cannot afford the high tuition fees charged by private medical institutions.
The University of Health Sciences (UHS) said the newly approved 475 seats are equivalent to the combined intake capacity of approximately five private medical colleges. The increase is expected to improve opportunities for students seeking admission to public institutions on merit.
Education experts welcomed the decision, saying that expanding the number of seats in government medical colleges will make medical education more accessible while reducing reliance on private colleges, where annual tuition fees can amount to hundreds of thousands of rupees.
According to experts, the initiative represents a positive step for the country’s medical education sector, providing talented students from financially constrained backgrounds with greater opportunities to pursue medical studies. They also said the increase is expected to strengthen the merit-based admission system in public institutions.
Academic circles expressed hope that similar measures to expand capacity and improve educational facilities in public medical colleges will continue in the future, enabling more students to gain access to quality medical education across the country.
