53-Year-Old Message in a Bottle Discovered in New Jersey Marsh Revives Family Memories

Islamabad: A message sealed inside a glass bottle and found during a marshland cleanup in the U.S. state of New Jersey has revived memories of a family more than five decades after it was first set adrift.

According to international media reports, John Cotterman, co-founder of the environmental organization The Tidelands Initiative, discovered the bottle while participating in a routine cleanup operation in a tidal marsh. After opening it, he found a handwritten note dated August 20, 1973.

The message read: “This bottle was launched from Second Street Beach in Ocean City on August 20, 1973. I have been kidnapped by ruthless sponge divers who are forcing me to dive into shark-infested waters. Please notify my family and return this message to my home—perhaps you can save my life.”

The note was signed by Lori Blair, who was just nine years old when the bottle was sent into the ocean.

Hoping to locate the author or her family, Cotterman shared a photo of the note on social media. The post eventually reached Lori’s sister, Allison Spencer, who explained that she had written the message at Lori’s request because her handwriting was neater. The two sisters then sealed it inside a glass bottle and released it into the sea from Ocean City Beach.

Spencer said her younger sister was known for her vivid imagination and unique sense of humor, and that the fictional rescue message reflected her creative personality.

Cotterman later learned that Lori Blair had passed away from cancer in 2019. He also discovered that he and Lori shared the same birth date, making the discovery even more meaningful.

He mailed the original note back to Allison Spencer, who said she plans to preserve it in a decorative shadow box as a lasting tribute to her sister.

Smiling as she recalled the discovery, Spencer said Lori had always believed that someone would eventually find the bottle. “If she were alive today,” Spencer said, “she would probably smile and say, ‘I told you someone would find it one day!'”
