Election Commission Decides to Propose Constitutional and Electoral Law Reforms Before Next General Elections
ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to initiate constitutional and legal reforms related to the electoral process ahead of the next general elections and has activated its Legal Reforms Committee to review existing election laws and constitutional provisions.
According to sources, the committee will comprise senior Election Commission officials, including representatives from the legal and other relevant wings. It will examine the legal and constitutional issues that emerged during the 2024 general elections and submit recommendations for necessary amendments.
The committee will review the existing legal framework to make electoral laws more effective, modern, and aligned with democratic principles and international best practices. The ECP plans to prepare proposals for amendments to the Constitution, the Elections Act, 2017, and the Elections Rules, 2017.
Sources said the commission will identify loopholes in the current electoral framework and forward its recommendations to the relevant forums for consideration. The reforms are aimed at ensuring a transparent, fair, and uniform electoral process across the country.
The Election Commission has set a target to complete its review of constitutional provisions related to elections by the end of 2026. The review of the Elections Act, 2017, and the Elections Rules, 2017, is also scheduled to be completed by December 2026.
In addition, proposals will be prepared to harmonize local government laws with the Elections Act and Elections Rules. The ECP will provide its opinion on any new local government legislation within three months of its enactment.
The commission said its objective is to ensure that Pakistan’s electoral laws remain effective and are updated in accordance with evolving democratic and constitutional requirements.
