Trump Announces Strait of Hormuz Blockade for Iranian Ships, Imposes 20% Transit Fee on Cargo
WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the reimposition of a blockade targeting Iranian vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, along with a new 20% transit fee on cargo passing through the strategic waterway.
In a statement posted on social media, President Trump said the United States would be known as the “guardian of the Strait of Hormuz.”
He stated that the blockade would apply only to Iranian ships and their customers, while vessels from all other countries would continue to have unrestricted access to the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump further announced that a 20% fee would be charged on all cargo transiting the strait, adding that the new blockade and transit policy would be implemented with immediate effect.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes, serving as a key passage for global energy supplies and international trade.
