Punjab Braces for Severe Heatwave as Temperatures May Reach 55°C
LAHORE: Punjab is expected to experience an intense heatwave in the coming weeks, with temperatures forecast to rise between 52°C and 55°C, prompting authorities to implement emergency measures across the province.
In response to the looming heatwave, the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has established heatwave camps in vulnerable districts and directed hospitals and district administrations to remain on high alert.
The preparedness measures were reviewed during a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who discussed plans to deal with the anticipated heatwave and possible flooding. She said rainfall this year is expected to be below normal, while the heatwave could last longer than usual.
The chief minister warned that temperatures in some parts of Punjab could reach 55°C and instructed all relevant departments to take immediate preventive measures to minimize risks to public health and safety.
Following her directives, the PDMA has launched a series of emergency initiatives. Heatwave camps have been set up in potentially affected districts, while public hospitals are establishing dedicated counters for heat-related patients and ensuring the availability of essential medicines.
Southern Punjab, particularly the Thal and Cholistan regions, is expected to face the most severe heat and humidity. To address the situation, authorities have activated water filtration plants, deployed water tankers, and ensured the availability of water reservoirs in these areas.
Relief camps are also being established in urban centers, where residents will have access to clean drinking water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), and basic medical assistance.
In addition, smog guns have been deployed to districts expected to be most affected by extreme heat. The PDMA has activated 24-hour control rooms for continuous monitoring, while district-level control rooms have been placed on high alert to ensure a rapid response to any emergency.
