PPP Sindh Announces Province-Wide Rallies Against India’s Alleged ‘Water Aggression’
Karachi: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh has announced province-wide protest rallies on Sunday, July 12, against what it described as India’s “water aggression,” under the slogan “Marsoon Marsoon, Sindhu Na Desoon” (“We may die, but we will not surrender the Indus”).
PPP Sindh President Nisar Khuhro said the rallies will be held at all district headquarters across the province in line with the call given by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Khuhro directed all district organizations of the party to organize large-scale demonstrations in protest against what he described as attempts to deprive Pakistan of its rightful share of water.
He said the Indus River is vital to Pakistan’s survival and livelihoods, adding that the party would not allow anyone to “strangle” the river. He also alleged that India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty violates international agreements and asserted that India cannot unilaterally suspend or terminate the treaty.
The PPP leader warned that using water as a political or strategic tool would pose a serious threat to regional peace. He stressed that millions of people depend on the Indus River for their livelihoods and said the party would continue to oppose any attempt to reduce Pakistan’s water share.
Khuhro further stated that Pakistan’s water rights are guaranteed under an international treaty and are not a concession. He urged that the principles of natural river flows and equitable water distribution be respected.
He also demanded that water be distributed transparently among Pakistan’s provinces in accordance with the 1991 Water Accord and called for the continuous flow of water through the Chashma–Jhelum Link Canal and the Taunsa–Panjnad (TP) Link Canal to be halted, describing them as flood canals.
The announcement reflects the PPP’s political position on water-sharing issues and follows the party’s criticism of India’s policies regarding the Indus Waters Treaty.
