Karachi Cloth Trader Receives Rs5 Million Extortion Demand via WhatsApp, Police Launch Investigation
Karachi: Police in Karachi have registered a case after a cloth trader allegedly received a Rs5 million extortion demand through a WhatsApp call, with the caller threatening to kill him and his family if the money was not paid.
According to police, the case was registered at Soldier Bazaar Police Station under Sections 384, 385, and 506-B of the Pakistan Penal Code on the complaint of Roshan Mal, a Hindu businessman residing in Garden East.
In his complaint, the trader stated that he runs a private business, while his son, Deepak Kumar, owns a cloth shop near Memon Masjid.
According to the FIR, on July 2, Deepak Kumar received a WhatsApp call from an unknown individual who requested his father’s phone number, claiming he wanted to discuss the purchase of a vehicle.
The complainant said his son informed him about the call later that night. When he attempted to return the call, it went unanswered.
He further alleged that at around 12:30 a.m. on July 3, the same number called again, and the caller demanded Rs5 million in extortion.
According to the complaint, the suspect threatened to harm the trader’s younger son, who frequently travels through Garden East, and his elder son, who regularly visits the family’s cloth shop, if the payment was not made.
The complainant said the caller also demonstrated knowledge of his daily routine, mentioning that he drove a white vehicle and operated a cloth business, while warning him to arrange the money or face serious consequences.
The trader told police that the caller also issued death threats against him and his children, leaving the entire family in fear. He said he initially hesitated to report the matter but approached the police after consulting family elders.
Following the registration of the case, Soldier Bazaar Police transferred the investigation to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) for further inquiry. Police said the investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
