UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Apologizes for Historic Forced Adoption Practices

LONDON:UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a formal government apology for the state’s role in the forced adoption of babies in England and Wales during the 1950s to the 1970s.

According to media reports, unmarried mothers during that period were subjected to significant pressure to give up their children for adoption. It is estimated that around **185,000 mothers** were coerced into surrendering their babies.

Addressing Parliament, Starmer described the treatment of thousands of mothers, children, and families as “a stain on our history.”

He also told those affected: **”The shame was not yours. It never was. The shame was ours.”**

The official apology follows years of campaigning by survivors and advocacy groups, as well as parliamentary investigations into historical adoption practices.

According to reports, campaigners representing those affected met with the Prime Minister ahead of his statement in Parliament, marking a significant milestone in the long-running effort to secure official recognition and an apology from the UK government.
